I Tested 4 "High-Absorption" Magnesiums - Two Labels Misled Me

Four magnesium supplements lined up on a kitchen counter with handwritten labels

Tested: Life Extension · NOW · Doctor’s Best · Solace Bay Magnesium

I'd been taking magnesium consistently, but I was still struggling with the very things I expected it to help with.

Falling asleep took forever. Even after 8–9 hours in bed, I'd wake up exhausted and foggy. And the moment I lay down, my legs just wouldn't settle — constant twitching, repositioning, and getting up to walk around.

I started wondering if magnesium was just another overhyped supplement.

Then I realized I'd been paying attention to the wrong thing.
My bottle said 400 mg, but I'd never really looked into the form of magnesium or how much my body could actually absorb.

Turns out, what's on the label and what your body actually absorbs aren't necessarily the same thing.

So I decided to put four popular magnesium supplements to the test, taking each one for 30 days and comparing what actually mattered: their formulas, absorption evidence, stomach tolerance, sleep support, and overall value.

Solace Bay

#1 Magnesium Complex

★ Top Pick

Solace Bay Magnesium Complex · Chelamax® magnesium bisglycinate

Magnesium / day275 mg
Regimen3 caps × 1
Guarantee90 days
Cost / day$0.82

Pros

  • Easy to swallow. Three capsules, one sip of water, done. They’re small and smooth enough that I can take all three at once without feeling one get stuck in my throat. It sounds like a small detail, but honestly, it’s one of the reasons I actually keep taking them every night.
  • 275 mg of elemental magnesium. That’s 275 mg of actual magnesium from 1,250 mg of Magnesium Bisglycinate — clearly listed on the label, not just the compound weight. The bisglycinate is made by Chelamax®, which reports up to 64% absorption in a lab model designed to simulate the human intestinal barrier. That was the highest absorption figure I found among the four products I compared.
  • The first night. My sleep felt deeper from the first night. I wasn’t expecting that and, honestly, I probably wouldn’t have believed it if someone else told me. It’s not like melatonin where you feel knocked out. It’s more like: if I put my phone down and decide to sleep, my body is actually ready to sleep.
  • How I woke up. My body felt rested and my head felt clear. Getting out of bed was almost harder — but for a good reason. My whole body felt completely relaxed, and I just wanted to stay there. Most importantly, no morning fog.
  • After the gym. This is where I noticed the biggest difference. My body used to stay tense for hours after a workout. Now, when it’s time to relax, it actually does. I can sit down and sink into the couch instead of lying there while my legs still want to move.
  • My restless legs. That uncomfortable, can’t-settle feeling at bedtime used to hit me pretty hard. Somewhere around day 7–10, I noticed it had mostly disappeared. Out of everything I noticed, this is probably the change I’d miss the most.
  • During the day. I don’t really “feel” the magnesium. I just feel like I actually slept. My sleep tracker showed improvements too, which was reassuring because part of me wondered if I was imagining the whole thing.
  • When I miss a dose. I forget sometimes — more often than I’d like to admit. What surprised me is that I don’t immediately feel like I’m back at square one the same night. The difference seems to hold, although I still prefer not to skip it.
  • Lot-specific Certificate of Analysis. You can open the actual COA directly from the website or scan the QR code on the label. Not just “available upon request.”
  • 30-day guarantee — even if the bottle is opened. You actually get a chance to try it and see how you feel, rather than a guarantee that only applies to unopened bottles.

Cons

  • Three capsules are still three capsules. Not one. If your main problem with magnesium is simply taking multiple pills, this doesn’t completely solve it. They’re just much easier to swallow.
  • It’s not the cheapest option. Doctor’s Best costs less and provides more magnesium per day. If your only priority is getting the lowest cost per milligram of magnesium, theirs makes more sense.
  • Don’t expect to “feel” it during the day. There’s no energy boost, no kick, and no obvious effect at 3 p.m. For me, the difference came from sleeping better and waking up feeling more rested. If you’re looking for something you can immediately feel during the day, this probably isn’t it.

Life Extension

#2 Neuro-Mag

Magnesium L-threonate (Magtein®)

Magnesium / day144 mg
Regimen3 caps × 1
Guarantee365 days
Cost / day$1.05

Pros

  • The first few days. I could actually tell I had taken it. The effect wasn’t really on my sleep — I noticed it more during the day. I even switched from taking it at night to taking it with breakfast, and it seemed to help me think a little more clearly and stay sharper.
  • After the gym. I noticed that when I skipped it, it took me longer to recover from harder workouts. When I took it, my body seemed to let go of the tension and relax more easily afterward.
  • A pretty clean formula. I didn’t find much unnecessary stuff in it — just four added ingredients and no titanium dioxide.
  • A 365-day guarantee. Opened bottles are handled case by case. Still, it’s the best guarantee out of the products I tested.

Cons

  • Only 144 mg of magnesium. That’s about a third of the Daily Value for three capsules and roughly a dollar a day. If you’re buying it mainly for magnesium, most of what you’re taking by weight is threonic acid. I also couldn’t find reliable absorption data showing how much of the magnesium is actually absorbed.
  • If sleep is your main goal, this wouldn’t be my pick. For me, this form felt much more useful during the day. I didn’t notice it helping me fall asleep or relax before bed. A couple of times, I even woke up during the night with my mind feeling unusually active.
  • The price. It’s not cheap. There are less expensive options using the same form of magnesium, so you’re definitely paying a premium here.
  • No lot-specific COA. The company says it can provide a summary of its testing reports and gives you a phone number to contact them, but I couldn’t find a way to download an actual Certificate of Analysis for your specific lot.

Doctor’s Best

#3 High Absorption Magnesium

Magnesium lysinate glycinate chelate (Albion® TRAACS®), tablets

Magnesium / day400 mg
Regimen4 tabs × 2
Guarantee60 days
Cost / day$0.58

Pros

  • The first few days. This had the highest magnesium dose of the products I tested, and maybe that’s why I noticed it so quickly. My sleep tracker showed better sleep, I stopped waking up during the night, and my mind felt calm and steady. There was one problem, though — more on that below.
  • The lowest price. This was the cheapest product I tested while still delivering a high dose of magnesium. If your goal is simply to get a solid form of magnesium for as little money as possible, this is a great option.
  • 400 mg of magnesium. The label provides 400 mg of magnesium per day — the highest amount in my test. I could clearly feel a difference in my sleep, although I sometimes wondered if that was simply because I was taking such a high dose. I couldn’t find reliable absorption data for this specific product.
  • After the gym. I didn’t notice the usual twitching or restlessness in my legs before bed. It genuinely seemed to help my body settle down and relax, even after harder workouts or runs.

Cons

  • The tablets are HUGE. I normally have no problem swallowing pills, but these are big, rough tablets with no smooth capsule coating. And you need four a day — two tablets, twice a day. I ended up breaking them apart and mixing them with water. Even for me, taking two at once was difficult.
  • Four tablets a day is a lot to keep up with. Two tablets, twice a day sounds simple, but I kept forgetting the second dose. For me, it was much harder to stick with than a once-a-day routine.
  • My stomach didn’t love the dose. A few times, I honestly didn’t want to take the tablets because my stomach wasn’t reacting well to that much magnesium. It started to feel like I was forcing magnesium into my body rather than supplementing it. This is one I’d be more careful with if you have a sensitive stomach.
  • No lot-specific COA. The product carries a “third-party tested” badge, but I couldn’t find a Certificate of Analysis for the specific lot or clear information identifying the independent testing organization.

NOW Foods

#4 Magtein

Magnesium L-threonate (Magtein®) — the same ingredient as #2

Magnesium / day144 mg
Regimen3 caps × 2
Guarantee30 days
Cost / day$1.33

Pros

  • The same formula as #2. It uses the same studied ingredient with the same research behind it. If sleep is your main goal, this still wouldn’t be my first choice. But during the day, I did feel some support from it.
  • Easy to swallow. The capsules are still a little bigger than I’d like, but I had no trouble getting them down.
  • An honest warning on the bottle. The label clearly mentions possible sleepiness, drowsiness, or headaches when you first start taking it. Very few brands in this category are this upfront about potential side effects.
  • A pretty clean formula. Nothing unnecessary stood out to me in the ingredient list.

Cons

  • 27% more expensive than #2 for essentially the same formula. I couldn’t find anything in the formula that justified paying more for this one.
  • Two separate doses a day. Just like with #3, splitting the dose makes it easier to forget. I regularly missed the morning capsule because I’m used to taking magnesium at night.
  • Only 144 mg of magnesium. Compared with the other products I tested, that doesn’t feel like much — especially when some provide 275 mg or 400 mg per day.
  • 30-day guarantee on unopened bottles only. Once you open the bottle and actually try the product, you can’t return it. You also have to pay for return shipping.

One Magnesium Stood Out Across the Board

I compared all four on dosage, value, ease of use, sleep support, and the things that actually mattered day to day.

Final Verdict: The Magnesium I'd Choose Again

After comparing all four supplements, Solace Bay stood out for its fully chelated Chelamax® magnesium bisglycinate, clearly stated elemental magnesium dose, and transparent formula. My sleep felt deeper from the very first night, and within 7–10 days the restless, can't-get-comfortable feeling in my legs at bedtime had quieted down. It's the option I'd choose for a simple, consistent nightly routine – without the guesswork of picking yet another magnesium supplement.
